Louis XVI style

WRITTEN IN FRENCH

The style commonly called "Louis XVI style" was born from the meeting between a movement denouncing the excessive sides of the rocaille style (or Louis XV style) and a renewed interest in the Greco-Roman world.
From the end of the 1750s, artists renewed their sources of inspiration and gave antique models an increasingly greater role, until they became almost exclusive on the eve of the Revolution of 1789.
Affecting all forms of art, this artistic mutation is particularly noticeable in these complementary fields of interior decoration and decorative arts. Ornamentalists, cabinetmakers, carpenters, goldsmiths, sculptors, bronze manufacturers, porcelain, silk or tapestry manufacturers, all joined this movement.
Through numerous illustrations, this work endeavors to expose the different phases and expressions of this style.
